A “rigid” school curriculum is putting pupils off study and causing them to behave badly, a teachers’ leader says.

Steve Sinnott, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, said England’s national curriculum failed to “stimulate” children.

Mr Sinnott said: “The curriculum is too rigid and does not allow teachers to respond to the pupils in the class and develop along the lines that will stimulate the class. Pupils become disengaged.”

Last month, the government announced that a Leadership Group of 12 teachers and head teachers would advise it on “strategies to ensure effective school discipline, improve parental responsibility for their children’s behaviour and deliver a culture of respect in all schools”. School staff have complained about increasing amounts of “low-level disruption” in classrooms, such as insolence and disruption of lessons.
