Meanwhile could someone please explain to me why we don’t simply immerse all the children in the world in some international sign language that would then be of use around the world.

I fully understand why Esperanto failed, but there seem to be far fewer emotional hurdles to sign language and I can envisage all sorts of scenarios in which such a skill might be genuinely life-saving…
