Another dose of common sense hits the UK education world…
Pupils are being advised to avoid taking certain A-level subjects if they want to get places at top universities.
Cambridge University and the London School of Economics (LSE) say traditional subjects offer the best preparation for study at degree level.
Subjects on their “don’t do these…” list include Theatre Studies, Sports Studies, Media Studies, Business Studies , Communication Studies, Leisure Studies, Film Studies, Performance Studies…
Well, you get the drift.
On the other hand, subjects they specifically recommend include Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry…
Further surprises to follow no doubt.

Which means Cambridge etc will continue to fill up with dedicated foreign students whilst we become a nation of personal trainers. Amongst my ‘well educated’ friends children we now have a nursery nurse, outdoor pursuits leader, theatre technician, cashier. Who needs scientists anyway…..

Be honest, considering the rewards of a scientific education in todays job market, which would you choose?
3 years of an undemanding degree, with the prospect of self furtherment on the job ladder, or 3 years of hard slog to be a scientist (in my case a Chemist), then poor pay and conditions if you have the temerity to want to use what you learnt in the job market
